Western Computer

Western Computer, a provider of Microsoft business applications, has been a key player in the industry for over 36 years. Founded by Tom Bardos, the company has grown to employ more than 140 professionals and is recognized as a leading Microsoft partner in North America. As Tom approached retirement, his primary concerns were safeguarding the legacy he had built and ensuring that Western Computer would continue to thrive.

Retirement on the Horizon

Western Computer’s mission has always been to provide top-tier ERP solutions that empower businesses to achieve their goals. Over the years, the company became an industry leader, known for delivering complex Microsoft ERP software solutions with precision and a deep understanding of client needs.

As Tom and Linda Collins (President of Western Computer) considered retirement, they faced the challenge of planning for a smooth leadership transition while preserving the company’s culture.  Concerned that a strategic buyer might strip away Western Computer’s identity, Tom sought a partner who would respect and build upon the legacy he had created.

“Anyone considering a partnership with Evergreen, I say go for it. In transitioning any company where the owner wants to step away, you couldn’t ask for a more solid team to support the company going forward.”

Partnering with Evergreen and Pine

Tom’s search for the right partner led him to Evergreen, a holding company recognized for its “buy and hold” strategy. Evergreen’s long-term approach and commitment to maintaining the unique cultures of its acquired companies resonated with Tom, who was looking for a partner who would honor Western Computer’s history and support its continued growth.

The decision to partner with Evergreen under Pine Services Group (Evergreen’s business applications vertical) was not initially part of Tom’s original retirement plan. However, when Evergreen approached him in early 2023, he recognized a unique opportunity to ensure the future success of Western Computer. The partnership discussions, marked by transparency and a deep understanding of Tom’s vision, confirmed that Evergreen was the right choice.

“I wasn’t interested in selling to a strategic,” Tom reflects. “I really wanted to find [a partner] that would find a home. I liked the message from Evergreen about buying a company and holding it, and the culture that we have—this was something I’ve been looking to see continue with the new leadership of the company.”

Transitioning

With the decision made, the transition process began. Focused on ensuring a seamless transition that would not disrupt the company’s operations or culture; Evergreen recruited Kristen Sage, a seasoned executive with a strong background in management and operations, as the new CEO of Western Computer. Kristen’s arrival marked the start of a carefully planned transition. She set out to learn the ins and outs of the business, with Tom and Linda by her side to provide guidance and support.

The transition was gradual, allowing Kristen to immerse herself in the company’s culture and operations while building relationships with the team. Tom remained actively involved, serving as a mentor, sharing his extensive knowledge of the business, and championing the changes being made to take Western into the future.  The collaboration between Tom and Kristen was characterized by mutual respect and a shared commitment to Western Computer’s success. Kristen quickly proved herself to be a capable leader, bringing new ideas to the table while honoring the company’s established traditions.

Ongoing Success

Since joining the Pine community, Western Computer has continued to thrive under Kristen’s leadership. The company has maintained its strong market position, continuing to deliver high-quality ERP solutions. Western Computer’s most recent accolades include 2024/2025 Microsoft Inner Circle, 2024/2025 Finalist Microsoft Partner of the Year- BC, and Top 100 VAR by Accounting Today. Kristen’s strategic vision, supported by Pine, has positioned Western Computer for sustained growth.

The partnership with Evergreen and Pine has also opened new opportunities for Western Computer. With Evergreen’s backing, the company is better positioned to explore new markets, invest in technology, and expand its service offerings. The resources and support provided by Pine have empowered Kristen to implement initiatives that are driving the company forward, ensuring that Western Computer remains a leader in the ERP space.

Conclusion

For Tom, the decision to partner with Evergreen was about more than just securing Western Computer’s future—it was about preserving the legacy he had built. Evergreen’s commitment to a “buy and hold” strategy, and respect for the company’s culture, made them the perfect partner to ensure that Western Computer continues to thrive. As Tom steps into retirement, he does so with confidence, knowing that Western Computer is in good hands, and poised for future growth under Kristen’s leadership and with Pine’s support.
